🌿 Hello, Beaumont

We're in the deep end of summer now, the part where the whole town moves a little slower and the snow cone lines run a little longer. Got me thinking, what would it take to make a town like ours great? Turns out we already have it. It's the people. And this week they showed up all over the place.

So this week: a new center opening its doors for families in recovery, a jazz night by the water with your name on it, and a hometown story that'll make your Tuesday.

Pour your coffee first. Let's get into it.

📰 This Week in Beaumont

Weekend meals, covered: the Food Bank just landed a big grant for local kids
Here's some good news that matters. The Southeast Texas Food Bank was awarded a Blue Impact grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and it's going straight to work feeding local children on the weekends, when school meals aren't there to fill the gap. For a lot of Beaumont kids, that's the difference between a hard Sunday and a full one. This is the quiet, essential kind of work that holds a community together, and it's happening right here. If you've ever wondered whether your corner of Southeast Texas takes care of its own, there's your answer.

Free screenings worth knowing about: Gift of Life comes to Beaumont
Mark this one, especially for the men in your life who "don't really do doctors." The Gift of Life Men's Health and Prostate Cancer Screening Program is coming to Beaumont on July 25, offering free screenings to men across Southeast Texas. Early detection saves lives, plainly, and free removes the last excuse. So text your husband, your dad, your brother, whoever needs the nudge. Sometimes looking out for our neighbors just means passing along the good information.

💛 The Date Night Plan · Friday, July 25. Here's your whole night in one stop, and it's a fun one.

Head to 5 Under on College Street and book a Swing Suite or a bay. No, you don't have to be good at golf, that's the whole point. You'll take turns swinging, talking a little trash, and laughing at each other while the drinks and the food keep coming. And this isn't sad bar food, we're talking shrimp and grits, beef tenderloin, Gulf Coast redfish. Save room, because the butter cake is the one everybody tells you about after. They're open till midnight on Friday, so there's no rush and no next stop to plan. Just show up, swing away, and let the night go long.

Reservation tip: book a bay ahead for a Friday night, they fill up.

🏡 Love Local

Good people doing good work right here in Beaumont.

Brandon Gouthier

I've run into Brandon a few dozen times over the years, small talk here and there, nothing long. And every single time, it feels like running into a friend. Maybe it's that he's the kind of person you just see eye to eye with. That's Brandon's whole thing, really, the guy who makes you feel like you're the only one in the room for the thirty seconds he's got you, and then he's gone, off to the next table.

This summer, the story is his. "Lipstick and Grease," his exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, pulls together photographs he made between 2005 and 2021 inside the hot rod and motorcycle scene, all chrome, denim, and slicked-back fifties style.

He came by that world honestly. His dad wrenched on local drag racers back in the sixties and had Brandon at the strip before he could walk, and the two built cars together for years. His father passed away last fall, and this show carries him in every frame.

Catch it at 500 Main Street through August 23, or shake Brandon's hand at the artist's reception on Thursday, August 7, from 5 to 7.

🏢 Beaumont Builds

New doors, big milestones, and the leaders growing our city.

A new place to land

The Loula Foundation just opened the doors on a new home in Beaumont, at 1269 N. Major Drive, for families doing some of the hardest work there is. The nonprofit walks alongside people rebuilding their lives after substance abuse and domestic violence, and now they've got a real space to do that work in. The Greater Beaumont Chamber was there for the ribbon-cutting to mark it as official.

They didn't waste any time putting the new space to work either. Just this past Saturday, half of Beaumont's motorcycle community showed up for a school-supplies event that Loula put on. Teddy Morse Cowboy Harley Davidson's H.O.G. chapter, Hard Riders Beaumont MC, and 409 Slingshots pitched in alongside volunteers and donors, and by the end of it, a whole lot of local kids had what they needed to walk into school feeling ready. That's the kind of quiet building our city deserves more credit for, and it's just getting started. Loula's already gearing up for their annual gala on August 27, more on that soon.

🦉Community

Community Exposed. The good stuff nobody's talking about.

A backpack, a haircut, a fresh start

Legacy Community Health is throwing their annual Back-to-School Festival, and it's more than a supply drive. The first 1,000 kids through the door walk out with a backpack full of school supplies, no cost, no catch. But Legacy's a health center at heart, so they're also offering free haircuts and on-site medical exams and vaccinations, the kind of stuff that usually means three different appointments squeezed into one Saturday morning instead. Add in activities, popcorn, emergency vehicles for the kids to climb through, and free children's books, and you've got a morning that sends Beaumont's kids into the new school year a little more ready, a little more confident, and looking sharp doing it. Saturday, July 25, 10 AM-1 PM · South Park Middle School, 4500 Highland Ave · Free

🫙The Tip Jar

Things you didn't ask for, but now you’re a step ahead.

This week: when a letter makes no sense, take a picture of it

Next time something lands in your mailbox written in fine-print legalese, an insurance notice, a warranty, one of those "important changes to your account" letters, don't squint at it for twenty minutes. Take a photo of it with your phone, drop the photo into a free AI tool like Claude, and type:

"Explain this letter to me in plain English. What is it actually saying, and do I need to do anything?"

That's it. You'll get the whole thing translated as a smart friend reads it for you. It works on school forms, medical paperwork, and the back of the jury summons too. Try it on the next confusing thing that shows up, then hit reply and tell me what it decoded for you. I love a good before-and-after.

Give it a try this week, then hit reply and tell me how it went. I read every one.

🌤️ Beaumont Weather

Wednesday: 99° / 78° · ☀️ · Mostly sunny, air quality's a little rough; take it easy if you're sensitive to it. Thursday: 90° / 77° · 🌦️ · Morning showers, then clearing. Bring an umbrella to Jazz at the Lake just in case, but the evening should hold. Friday: 92° / 77° · ⛅ · Partly cloudy, a touch more comfortable than the rest of the week. Saturday: 92° / 75° · 🌩️ · Mostly sunny, but a pop-up storm's possible in the afternoon. Outdoor plans? Keep an eye on the sky.

Heads up: there's some tropical moisture moving through Thursday and Friday, so don't be shocked by a quick shower. Nothing that should keep you home.

🗳️ You Decide

We read every word you send. And this week, I need your help.

We're still new here, you and me, and I'm building this thing for you. So tell me straight:

☀️ Before You Go

That's your week, handed to you. The good news, the plans, the date night, all of it sorted so you don't have to go digging. Now go do something with it. Book the bay, grab the girls, get out there. Beaumont's got more going on than anyone's letting on, and now you're the one who knows it.

See you around town.
