The island that won two wars.

A 75-acre island in the Neches, a few blocks from downtown, helped win two world wars. There is no sign on it. Most of us drive over it on I-10 without a clue.

That is the kind of thing this newsletter is for. The stuff that is right here, hiding in plain sight, that nobody ever told you.

This week: the trains in the West End are finally about to go quiet, a church on Avenue A just turned seventy-five, and the story of that island, the ships it built and the men who never came home.

The West End Quiet Zone Is Back

Last week we told you the paperwork was in. This week the answer came back. The Federal Railroad Administration has lifted the suspension of the West End Quiet Zone, and the city has passed the word along to Union Pacific. City officials do caution it may take a little while for the news to reach every engineer running trains through town, so don't set your watch by the silence just yet.

If you live anywhere near those crossings, your nights are about to get noticeably better.

Seventy-Five Years on Avenue A

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church marked its 75th anniversary this month, with Bishop David Toups celebrating the anniversary Mass and generations of parish families filling the pews. The church has been serving Beaumont since 1951.

Very few things in any city make it to seventy-five. When one does, it is worth stopping to notice.

There is an island in the Neches, just off Pine Street, with no marker on it. No sign at the gate. From the I-10 bridge, it looks like any other stretch of industrial riverfront, cranes and steel and gravel.

For more than a hundred years, those seventy-five acres have been part of every war this country has fought. It built the cargo ships that crossed the Atlantic in two world wars, the minesweepers that cleared Italy's harbors, and the offshore rigs that ran the Cold War economy. One ship built there, the USS Portent, went down off Anzio in 1944 with eighteen men aboard. She was the first ship lost in that landing.

Most of us drive past all of it without a clue.

I wrote the whole story down, the shipyard, the nine thousand workers, the women who welded the hulls, the photographs sitting in the Library of Congress. It is worth the read.

This week: Use AI as your research assistant

Planning a trip is the easiest place to see how useful this gets. Instead of fifteen tabs, you just ask.

Ask it to build you an itinerary. "I've got two days in New Orleans, I like food and history, not a big partier. Plan it out."

Ask what's worth seeing in a town you're headed to. It'll tell you what locals actually do, not just the tourist stops.

Ask it how far things are. "How long to drive from Beaumont to the San Antonio Riverwalk?" You get the answer without leaving the chat.

Then keep going. Move things around, ask for a cheaper option, tell it your kid gets carsick. It adjusts every time.

Try it: pick a trip you've been thinking about, near or far, and ask it to plan the first day.
